MOUNTAIN RIVER - The Esopus Creek: Headwaters to the Hudson

MOUNTAIN RIVER is the story of New York State's Esopus Creek from its Catskill Mountain headwaters on Slide Mountain to the Hudson River more than sixty-five miles to the east. This journey includes the trout-rich upper Esopus and New York City's Ashokan Reservoir. Water releases and runoff from The Ashokan feed the Lower Esopus. The Creek flows east through rich agricultural lands of the Hurley flats and several towns and population centers. In Saugerties, below the Cantine Dam, the Esopus estuary flows out to the Hudson River.

MOUNTAIN RIVER's history of the Esopus includes geologic times, native and colonial habitation, a world-class trout fishery, plus historic water power, recreational, industrial and agricultural uses. It highlights conservation efforts, the struggle with turbidity and ongoing stream-side restoration.

Footage includes interviews with New York City and New York State scientists, historians, authors, conservationists, and anglers plus lots of on-the-creek fly-fishing scenes. Local residents, collectors, libraries, and historical societies have provided archival photos, historic scenes and vintage images.

Highlighted music is performed by Tim Kapeluck and friends, Evan Pritchard, the late Artie Traum and friends, Jay Ungar and Molly Mason.

MOUNTAIN RIVER is produced by Tobe Carey and Mark Loete and directed by Tobe Carey.
